January 16th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but did you know that since 1994 it's also been a national day of service? MLK was a prominent civil rights leader who fought for equality for people of color. He has been an inspiration for countless movements following his assassination in 1968. Washington Volunteer In Honor of MLK Whether it's volunteering to help make the world a cleaner place or helping those in need, today (and every day) should be focused on serving your community. It doesn't have to be hours of your time every day, every little bit is needed. Benefits of Volunteering Not only are you helping your community, other people, animals, and/or our environment, volunteering has benefits for you: 1. It helps counteract stress, anger, and anxiety 2. Combats depression

Volunteer Opportunities
1. Pick up litter to make the community a more beautiful place
2. Plant fruit trees (with the town's permission) in public areas to provide food for those in need
3. Make sandwiches and healthy meals for the homeless
4. Volunteer time at a local food bank or food distribution center
5. Spend time serving food at a soup kitchen
6. Help build with Habitat for Humanity
7. Volunteer your time serving at the Boys and Girls Club
8. Start a community compost that can be used for community gardens
