Becoming a change maker and doing good things for our environment, like picking up trash in your community, starts with one person doing something seemingly small. And from that it grows and grows until big impacts are seen.
So why is litter such a big deal? Much of our litter ends up in the oceans. In fact, 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year and at least 8 million tons of that plastic ends up in our oceans. When plastic ends up there, it's often eaten by marine animals. And over time that can actually kill them. It's estimated that over 1 million marine animals are killed every year because of litter in our oceans.
But I don't live by an ocean, you may say. Well, I'm sorry to say that that doesn't matter. Our trash can be blown or washed into drains, rivers, and streams which will lead to the ocean. So picking up litter wherever you are is SUPER important.
